If you run an entire installation on one machine and want to do anything else than small test crawls Im sure you need more physical RAM in you machine.
For larger crawls you would need 2gbytes of RAM for every harvester instance alone. And the other apps needs RAM as well.
So for a one machine production setup with e.g. 2 harvester instances I would say 8Gb of RAM in total
It sounds much like RAM swapping is exactly your problem

Does anyone else have any issues with the memory swapping process
kswapd0 taking up all the resources and crashing their server once
netarchive has been started?

I am running
Netarchivesuite 3.10
mq 4.1 for linux
Java version 1.6.0_19

Centos 5 Linux with full updates in place
Two 2.5GB L5420 Xeon CPUs
2 terabytes of disk space

Many Thanks
